A craft everyone will love and a great keepsake.

I love crafts and more so items that you can make that not only have memories but are beautiful keepsakes. Every year we make these in different variations whether for Christmas for the Grandma’s, or to document Ayden’s different stages of growth. They make the perfect gifts and are great kits for family gatherings or events.

This year for Mother’s Day we did a a growth print of Ayden’s hand and some flowers we made into ornaments. Salt Dough ornaments or keepsakes last a long time as long as you do them correctly.

Here are the step by step instructions on how you can do this with your loved ones or make gifts for the upcoming holidays this year.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups of all purpose flour
  • 1 cup of salt
  • 1.5 cups of warm water
  • Clear Glaze Finish or Mod Podge

Preheat your oven to 250. Combine all ingredients and knead for 10 minutes. If your dough is too dry add a little bit of water in and continue to knead. Roll dough out to the desired thickness. Use any cookie cutter you would prefer and cut out different shapes. If having your child place their hand into salt dough make sure to get good imprint. Use straw to make hole at top to hang your salt dough ornament. Bake for 1-2 hours, if still doughy put back in for another hour. The thinner the ornaments the less they will take to bake. You can also raise temperature to 325 but do this gradually or they may start to puff up. I prefer to leave at 250 and let dry out for several days before painting and decorating.

Once you have let them cool or dry out for several days they can be painted with acrylic or kids paint. If adding glitter use glue, allow to dry and then spray with clear glaze or finish with Mod Podge.
